Weekly News 

January 22nd - January 26th  

Week At A Glance: 

This week is Unit 3, Week 5. A list of new spelling and vocabulary words, for Unit 3, Weeks 1-5, have been uploaded to the “file manager” link. It is not necessary to print the spelling/vocabulary lists, as the students will have a hard copy in their HORSE binder. However, just in case your child is absent or leaves the folder at school, you know where to look for the words. 

 Reading: Riding the Rails West! (Genre: Expository Text)

·        Comprehension Skill – Sequence 

·        Comprehension Strategy – Summarize 

·        Vocabulary – Suffixes

 **Students should be working towards their AR goal

 

Math: Topic 9- Fractions

 ·        Please memorize your multiplication facts 0-10. Also, practice division facts. 

·        We will have Topic 9 test on Friday, Jan. 26 

·        Study math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication)! Students can practice their facts at home on Math Facts in a Flash through RenPlace AND they can work on other math, and ELA skills on Front Row (class code: sherrh). 

 

Spelling/Phonics: Diphthongs /oi/ and /ou/ 

Grammar: Combining Sentences with Verbs

 Social Studies: American Heroes 

Important Dates: 

·        January 23: PE Bowling Field Trip

·        January 29: PTA @ 6:00 pm/6th grade performing

·        January 31: Progress Reports will be sent home

·        February 14: Valentine’s Day/Exchange

·        February 16:½ Day for Students; Dismissal at 11:00

 ·        February 26: 3rd Grade Wax Museum. Save this date as every 3rd grader will have a major part to play in this program. More detailed information will be sent home this week.

 

Classroom Reminders:

·        Check your child’s HORSE folder each day for homework.  

·        Please send a healthy snack each day.

·        Wear RED on Wednesdays for monthly character color 

·        Frontrowed.com – Students can practice Math and ELA standards here (class code: sherrh)

 *Spelling test: Students will be tested on only 10 of the 20 assigned words. They will also be required to write 2 sentences using any 2 of the spelling words. Sentences will be graded on capital letter, correct spelling of the word used and punctuation mark.

*Reading homework: Every Monday, I will send home a reading trifold to answer. Students are to read their weekly story, in the Literature Anthology book, and answer the questions. If there is a question your child does not know the answer to and you are unable to help, skip it. We will read the story and go over all the questions in class Wednesday. Remember to bring the book and the questions back on Wed. If your student forgets their book, I have online access setup for each student to be able to read the story online. This also alleviates the need to take the book home. However, students are always free to take home the book if they/you would like.
