Weekly News

January 8th - January 12th

Happy New Year and welcome back to school! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and were able to get some much-needed rest!

Week At A Glance:

This week is Unit 3, Week 4. A list of new spelling and vocabulary words, for Unit 3, Weeks 1-5, have been uploaded to the “file manager” link. It is not necessary to print the spelling/vocabulary lists, as the students will have a hard copy in their HORSE binder. However, just in case your child is absent or leaves the folder at school, you know where to look for the words.

Reading: Big Ideas From Nature (Genre: Expository Text)

·        Comprehension Skill – Main Idea

·        Comprehension Strategy – Summarize

·        Vocabulary – Word Parts: Root words/Prefixes

·        AR: RenPlace Home Connect is a great tool to use to keep up with your child’s AR goal/progress. Encourage 20 minutes of independent reading at home. Students should also be taking 2-3 tests each week.

Math: Topic 9- Understanding Fractions

·        Please continue to study math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication)! Students can practice their facts at home on Math Facts in a Flash through RenPlace AND they can work on other math, and ELA skills on Front Row (class code: sherrh). Let me know if you have questions about either of these sites.

Grammar: Future-Tense Verbs

Writing: Organization/Strong Paragraphs

Important Dates:

·     January 15: Martin Luther King Jr. Day - No School

·     January 23: Bowling Field Trip at Pin Place

    • Permission slips are being sent home 1/8 and need to be returned to school by 1/17

Classroom Reminders:

·        Check your child’s HORSE folder each day for homework.

·        Please send a healthy snack each day.

·        Wear RED on Wednesdays for monthly character color

·        Frontrowed.com – Students can practice Math and ELA standards here (class code: sherrh)

*Spelling test: Students will be tested on only 10 of the 20 assigned words. They will also be required to write 2 sentences using any 2 of the spelling words. Sentences will be graded on capital letter, correct spelling of the word used and punctuation mark.

*Reading homework: Every Monday, I will send home a reading trifold to answer. Students are to read their weekly story, in the Literature Anthology book, and answer the questions. If there is a question your child does not know the answer to and you are unable to help, skip it. We will read the story and go over all the questions in class Wednesday. Remember to bring the book and the questions back on Wed. If your student forgets their book, I have online access setup for each student to be able to read the story online. This also alleviates the need to take the book home. However, students are always free to take home the book if they/you would like.

***Class Wish List:
