January 8-12  

Parents,

This week we are on Unit 3, Week 4 and our class will be learning all about new ideas. We will talk about the ideas we get from nature.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing. Both activities can be printed from the “homework/study guide” link. They do not need to be sent to school. Also, be sure to look at the Study Guide for this week as it has more detailed information of what we’re covering.

·        Word Workout: Root Words and Prefixes

Ø Students will add the correct base word to prefixes pre-, dis- and mis-

·        Comprehension: Main Idea and Key Details

Our Week at a Glance:

Reading: Big Ideas from Nature (Genre: Expository Text)

·        Comprehension Skill – Main Idea

·        Comprehension Strategy – Summarize

·        Vocabulary – Root Words

**All students should be at 12% of their AR goal by Friday

Math: Topic 9- Understanding Fractions

·        A Parent Letter explaining what we will cover in Topic 9 can be found under the “homework…” link.

·        Our next, tested, time test will cover 1, 2, 5, & 10 facts. The tested week will be the week of Jan. 22nd. We are taking practice tests this week and next week. Students should be practicing math facts daily.

·        Study math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication)! Students can practice their facts at home on Math Facts in a Flash through RenPlace AND they can work on other math, and ELA skills on Front Row (class code: kc2h9e). Let me know if you have questions about either of these sites

Spelling/Phonics: Prefixes: mis-, pre-, dis-

Grammar: Future-Tense Verbs

Writing: Organization/Strong Paragraphs

Social Science: Martin Luther King, Jr.

Testing for this week will be:

·        Thursday – Spelling and Vocabulary

·        Friday – Reading comprehension and Grammar (Future-tense Verbs)

Dates to Remember:

·        January 10: Report cards will be sent home along with several reports for your child

·        January 11 & 12: I will be out of the classroom for a ½ day on the 11th and all day the 12th. Please send in a note of any transportation changes or call the front office if I am not informed by Wednesday.

·        January 15: No School – Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday

·        January 17:Money for Bowling Field Trip is due

·        January 23:PE Bowling Field Trip. All money is due by January 19; 100th Day of SchoolJ

·        January 29: PTA @ 6:00/6th grade performing

Reminders:

·        Wear red on Wednesday to show you Care.

·        Students are now going to Art (Ms. Newby), instead of Music

·        Send a healthy snack each day.
